Battery Park by Sunrise: EFA Remodel/Renovation Winner

Battery Park by Sunrise received the Gold Award, the highest honor in the 2025 Environments for Aging Remodel/Renovation Competition. In partnership with HKS Architects, the team transformed the community’s multipurpose space into a refined social hub that blends sophistication with function. The design introduces clear zones for dining, gathering, and wellness, and creates a seamless flow that strengthens connection and purpose. This achievement highlights how thoughtful renovation and design leadership can set a new standard for senior living environments.

Carolina Grandelle Steckley: Next Wave Award Recipient

CURATED by Sunrise Design Manager Carolina Grandelle Steckley is recognized as one of the inaugural recipients of the Next Wave Awards, presented by Environments for Aging. The program celebrates emerging leaders who shape the future of senior living design. Carolina combines an international background in architecture and urban studies with expertise in residential and multifamily projects, creating environments that are both functional and inspiring. She leads new construction and complex renovations, consistently elevating spaces through thoughtful planning, layered details, and a clear understanding of how seniors live, connect, and thrive.

Brighton Gardens of Saddle River I Saddle River, NJ

Brighton Gardens of Saddle River: EFA Design Showcase

Saddle River is featured in the Spring 2025 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 75). The renovation transforms dated interiors into spaces that draw on the site’s bucolic surroundings and create a more contemporary residential character. The first floor is reconfigured to feature an updated bistro, dining room, and multipurpose areas, with finishes and furnishings selected to balance warmth and sophistication. Cohesive material choices, layered lighting, and refined detailing support both daily use and larger gatherings, while enhancing the sense of connection and community throughout the design.

Sunrise at Lonsdale Square: EFA Design Showcase

Sunrise at Lonsdale Square is featured in the Spring 2025 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 91). The design immerses residents in biophilic experiences, where nature is felt as part of everyday life. Panoramic views of North Vancouver’s mountains and ocean frame each moment, complemented by living walls, an indoor micro farm, and green roofs that flow outward like terraces of greenery. Indoors, the atmosphere feels both boutique and personal, with natural colors, textures, and moods evoking the calm and richness of the surrounding landscape. Sunrise of Redmond I Bellevue, WA

REDMOND: recognized for outstanding renovations

Awarded second place in the Senior Housing News (SHN) Architecture & Design Awards for Best Renovation, our Redmond project was celebrated for its transformation of a previously undefined common space into a vibrant hub for connection. It was also featured in the Spring 2024 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 89) for its thoughtful design approach and regional inspiration. The renovation introduced distinct zones for dining, gathering, and programming, all grounded in a warm, natural palette that reflects the Pacific Northwest. Improved sightlines and an intuitive flow now connect communal spaces in assisted living and memory care, enhancing the experience for both residents and caregivers.
Sunrise of McLean Village | McLean, VA

mclean village: EXCEPTIONAL NEW CONSTRUCTION

This project in McLean, Virginia, was nominated in the Assisted Living category of the Senior Housing News (SHN) Architecture & Design Awards and featured in the Spring 2024 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 88). The interiors reflect a timeless, classic style with jewel-toned finishes and fabrics that enhance wayfinding and add depth throughout the community. Thoughtfully placed furniture and clearly defined areas guide residents with ease while supporting comfort and connection. Artwork by local artists and accessories from nearby antique shops bring warmth and character, tying the spaces to McLean’s history. The bistro’s integrated bar transitions from a casual coffee spot to an evening lounge, encouraging gatherings and fostering a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

cupertino: EFA DESIGN SHOWCASE

Cupertino was featured in the Spring 2024 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 87), which highlights projects that promote wellness, comfort, and meaningful engagement for older adults. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the community’s interiors reflect a strong sense of place while prioritizing resident-centered design. Nature-inspired elements such as wood beams in the bistro, Capiz shell lighting in the salon, and light oak flooring in the foyer create warmth and connection. Midcentury influences appear in geometric tile at the parlor fireplace, lighting, and drapery selections, adding a modern yet familiar touch. Thoughtfully curated artwork, including local artists and themed corridor galleries, supports wayfinding while sparking conversation and engagement among residents.

Vienna: THOUGHTFUL NEW CONSTRUCTION

Included in the Spring 2024 Environments for Aging (EFA) Design Showcase (see page 90), this project was selected for its ability to balance sophistication with a sense of home. The Showcase celebrates environments that support older adults through thoughtful, engaging design, and this community was noted for its elegant interiors, open layout, and connection to local artistry. A hand-carved triptych of the Shenandoah Mountains and custom furnishings create a welcoming first impression, while the seamless flow between common spaces encourages interaction and ease of movement. Outdoor courtyards, terraces, and a mural created in partnership with the Vienna Arts Society reflect the community’s commitment to creativity, comfort, and daily connection.
Sunrise of Fairfax | Fairfax, VA

fairfax: aRGENTUM aWARD

Recognized with a 2022 Argentum Senior Living by Design Award (see page 7), this project was celebrated for its creative approach to expanding access and enhancing resident life. Inside, intimate spaces blend white-painted architectural woodwork with natural materials such as stacked stone, brick, and wood beams to add warmth and texture. Neutral finishes are layered with rich, heritage-inspired fabric patterns to create depth and character throughout. The community’s history is highlighted through curated artwork by local artists, connecting residents to place while sparking conversation. These thoughtful interior design elements support a welcoming, engaging environment that enhances daily life for residents.
Old Town, VA | Curated

Old town ALEXANDRIA: ARGENTUM AWARD

This new construction community was honored with a 2021 Argentum Senior Living by Design Award (see page 16) for its successful integration into a historically significant neighborhood. The project overcame strict architectural review processes to create a building that blends classic character with modern functionality. The design features a vibrant mix of rich colors, bold patterns, and curated accessories that reflect the energy of Old Town while maintaining a warm, residential feel. A rooftop terrace offers views of the Potomac and surrounding cityscape, while interior spaces highlight original artwork from local artists affiliated with the nearby Torpedo Factory. The project also earned LEED Silver Certification demonstrating the project team’s commitment to sustainability.
